Like its earlier counterpart in Chester, the local authorities demanded the chain’s York location be toned down from the chain’s typically more ostentatious architecture in an attempt to better preserve the historic character of the city.

Instead of the usual cream faience clad facade, a bare, buff brick finish was opted for, with the large tower looking appropriately fortress-like, and the usual angular Odeon typeface was substituted for a more sombre serif.

The auditorium was tripled in 1972 and business continued until 2006 when the cinema finally closed to then be taken over by the Reel Cinema chain. The Everyman Group then assumed control of operations in 2017. As of 2026 the building is still operating as a cinema with 4 halls and an exterior relatively unchanged since its initial construction.
