Once one of the many cinemas clustered around Taichung’s city centre during the industry’s golden age, the Seng Yuh Theater was commissioned in the early 1960s by brothers Xiao Songchuan and Xiao Songshan on the site of their former ancestral home, and named after their father, Xiao Sen-yu.
The theater was designed in a fashionably modernist style by architect Xie Birong, and artist Wang Shuihe, who at the time was in great demand producing sculpted artworks for building facades throughout Taichung’s Central district. The building’s prominent, romanised signboard clearly signaled to potential audiences that Western movies were its primary offering.
Seng Yuh stayed in operation over 40 years until 2003. The former lobby section of the building is now in use by the current owners as a private parking garage.
