Jinsha Theater sits at the head of the eponymous township’s main shopping street on the heavily militarised island of Kinmen, and originally served to entertain the local residents and any soldiers garrisoned nearby. It’s construction was instigated by the local government, who divided shares amongst themselves and a number of local store-owners, making this a rare example of a joint private and publically owned cinema in Taiwan.
Thawing relations between Taiwan and China during the 1970s led to a gradual reduction in Kinmen’s military personnel, and a cinema of such size could not be supported by the local populace alone. By 1987 the cinema had ceased business and has lain derelict since.
