The Zhongyang ‘Central’ Theater in Guanmiao began life as a simple ‘open-air’ theater, built at a time when the town’s rattan industry was flourishing and the region’s many workers were in need of entertainment. The building would gain it’s current form in 1969 after a period of good business led to a total rebuild.
The new layout follows a plan common to many cinemas in Taiwan at the time, with the ground floor housing stores on either side of a central corridor, and the movie theater itself occupying the upper levels. This was accessed via the rear of the building, forcing patrons to pass down the interior shopping street.
Business declined in the 1980s in tandem with the rattan industry, and despite receiving a full renovation in 1986, the cinema lay shuttered and derelict by the turn of the 1990s.
