The ‘City Center’ building in Kaohsiung’s Yancheng District was built during the early 1980s during a boom of commercial interest in the area. The complex comprised of some 208 residential units sat atop great swathes of retail and office space, along with entertainment options including a 2-screen cinema and roller-rink.
By the late 1980s, newer shopping districts such as Sanduo were gaining popularity, and Yancheng suffered an exodus of trade so that by the mid 1990s, much of the building lay derelict and in disrepair, gaining a reputation as a hotbed for crime and vagrancy.
In 2021 a fire broke out from a ground-floor business that completely engulfed the building, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. It was then demolished the following year.
