3D miniature architectural model, hand-cast from acrylic-reinforced plaster.
Comes gift boxed and includes technical drawing and photographic postcards.
Constructed in the mid-1950s by local Changhua architect Li Wangshui, Beidou’s Yuandong Theater showcases the restrained, asymmetric Art-Deco style that was fashionable at the time, laced with some distinctly Japanese flourishes such as the rounded, ‘shoji’-style’ windows built into the staircase wall on the building’s Northern facade.
A rare example of a public/private sector partnership, the cinema was financed by the local Town government in association with several private shareholders – a situation that complicated matters in more recent times, when a controlling interest in order to invoke its demolition was sought.
After many years of dereliction, the building is now a registered Cultural Asset, and is set to be repurposed over the coming years.
